PORT GAMBLE — Sleepy Port Gamble is about to get its historical foundations rocked. The quiet town will become one of the noisiest places in the state next weekend, as Old Mill Days brings the biggest new fireworks show in Washington to the small hamlet.
Add a few concerts, thousands of people and a carnival, and Port Gamble will be the place to be June 9-11.
Starting Tuesday John Miller, the president of Old Mill Days, will be overseeing the largest setup of a carnival, vendors, stages, a beer garden and — his favorite — fireworks shows in the area, if not the state, he said.
“There’ll be a lot of food,†Miller said. “And free admission to the carnival, beer garden, except for your beer, of course, and concerts.â€
The celebration has a thing for being the biggest.
Boomtown Fireworks’ displays — at two and a half hours each — will be taking to the air with explosive results both Friday and Saturday nights. These fireworks productions will be vying for the biggest in the state, Miller said. Three fireworks companies are currently working on the shows, logging more than 100 hours in preparation.
All the while, the 15,000 people expected to attend will have the chance to ride on the largest Ferris wheel in the state, which is being strategically placed right on the edge of the town’s bluff. This will allow those riding the 80-foot wheel an amazing view of Port Gamble Bay, and, if they’re fortunate, the fireworks.
“It’d be incredible to watch the fireworks from this ferris wheel,†Miller said.
Along with these activities, there will also be a classic car show both Friday and Saturday night, showing off about 200 vehicles, he said.
Speaking of cars, parking will be available at the Old Mill site, with Kitsap Transit volunteering to run shuttles up to the activities.
“This is going to be amazing,†Miller said. “So much fun. Come kick off the summer in Kitsap!â€
