KINGSTON — As pancakes fly through the air with the greatest of ease, many are hoping these tasty morsels will kneed a little dough for the Kingston Fourth of July fireworks.
The Kingston Rotary is hosting the annual Fourth of July fund-raising pancake breakfast for the first time this year. In years past, the Kingston Kiwanis handled it, but this year the group passed the firework, er, torch.
“In the past, it’s always been the Kiwanis,†said chairwoman of the breakfast Winifred Whitfield. “Last year, we partnered with them to see how it was organized, and this year we are doing it by ourselves.â€
Whitfield is hoping the fund-raiser will bring in about $1,000, which the Rotarians can contribute to Kingston Fireworks Fund. The group is asking for a donation of about $4 to $5 in exchange for pancakes, sausage, eggs, juice and coffee.
“The Kingston Thriftway is giving us a deal on materials for the breakfast,†said Rotarian Doug Hallock. “We normally have about 250 to 300 people show up. And we ask for about $4, but some people put $20 or even $100 into the donation jar. It really helps out.â€
Whitfield said the event is one that many people look forward to all year round, because they get to see neighbors and people they only see at this breakfast.
“Historically, this event is very well attended,†she said. “It’s a wonderful social community activity.â€
“A lot of pancake mix goes into this event,†said Kiwanis member Debbie Anderson, who used to organize the event before the Rotarians took over.
The breakfast will be served from 8:30 to 11 a.m. June 10 at the Northwest Labor Center on Ohio Street.
“We started having it there a few years ago,†Anderson said. “It’s really the only place in Kingston with a kitchen, enough room and parking for everyone who turns out for this event.â€
“Getting to say hello to everybody is nice,†Whitfield said. “There are the same people who come to this breakfast every year.â€
