A 30-year-old Bremerton woman died at the scene of a two-car accident on State Route 307, also known as Bond Road, at about 8:20 a.m. Wednesday morning, Washington State Patrol officials said.

Gemma Zapata Collins was driving towards Kingston when her 1985 Toyota Corolla slid on the icy roadway just north of the Gunderson and Bond Road intersection, officials said. Her car was hit on the passenger side after it crossed the center lane by Kingston resident Cheryl Marie Mehs’ southbound 2002 Chevy pickup.

Mehs was uninjured in the accident, WSP officials said. Collins died from severe multiple internal injuries, according to the Kitsap County Coroner’s Office. Both women were wearing their seatsbelts at the time of the accident.

A separate accident happened at about 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, on the Hood Canal Bridge, involving three cars, WSP officials said. Bremerton resident Ricky E. Rogers, 30, attempted to stop for a collision in front of his 2002 Honda Passport, when he was rear ended by a 1982 Ford pickup truck, driven by an unknown person, which was rear ended by a 2001 GMC Sonoma, driven by Gig Harbor resident Jennifer L. Robinson, 38, officials said.

Robinson was taken to Harrison Hospital for chest and neck injuries, while no one else was injured in the accident, officials said.

Just an hour later, at about 9 a.m., another accident occurred on the Hood Canal Bridge caused by the icy conditions, officials said. Bainbridge Island resident Timothy A. Rote, 66, skidded his 1991 International bus into the vehicle in front of him, a 2002 International tractor driven by McCleary resident Timothy Holmes, 38, officials said. Holmes’ car hit the 2001 Ford truck in front of him, driven by Port Orchard resident James Striegel, 60, officials said.

The accident was caused when a car in front of Striegel spun out and all the cars behind it tried to slow down to avoid it, officials said. Rote suffered minor facial lacerations, but was not taken to a hospital. Everyone else was uninjured, officials said.

With cold temperatures expected to continue into the weekend, WSP officials want to remind drivers to keep slow speeds and leave plenty of space between cars.
