They won’t be bored

While every child looks forward to summer vacation, those glorious days without school can turn out to be pretty long and boring. How many hours can a kid spend playing video games and tormenting siblings?

Several Kitsap County theaters offer a much better alternative — summer theater workshops. Western Washington Center for the Arts in Port Orchard, Central Stage Theatre of County Kitsap in Silverdale and Bainbridge Performing Arts Theatre School on Bainbridge Island all offer classes and workshops for young thespians of all ages and skill levels.

The BPA Theater School, which runs all year, starts the summer session June 26, with classes for grades 1-4, 5-8 and Camp Teen Broadway for older students. A second session starts July 10.

Each class culminates in a stage presentation, with the first through fourth graders doing “Coyote Tales” and “Russian Tales of Enchantment,” fifth through eighth graders presenting “Let’s Do a Musical Part 1A and 1B,” and “It’s Showtime!” and Camp Teen Broadway doing “Guys and Dolls Junior.”

Tuition ranges from $195 for the youngest age group to $300 for Camp Teen Broadway. Scholarships are available. For more information call BPA at (206) 842-8569 or go to www.theplayhouse.org.

CSTOCK is registering now for the summer Children’s Workshop for ages 7-14, which runs July 24 through Aug 4, concluding with three stagings of “How to Eat Like a Child,” Aug. 4, 5 and 6.

In this musical, children give 23 comical lessons such as “How to beg for a dog,” “How to torture your sister,” and “How to laugh hysterically.”

Cost of the two-week session is $100 if registered by July 1, $125 after that date. The Children’s Workshop information brochure and registration form can be downloaded from the CSTOCK Web site at www.cstock.org.

WWCA is running two summer workshops, “Disney’s Jungle Book Kids,” for ages 7-12, July 10-21 with performances July 22, 23 and 24, and “Into the Woods, Jr.,” for ages 13-18. The workshop runs July 17-28, with performances Aug. 11-20.

This workshop is by audition only, with auditions held at 2 p.m. June 17 and 18 at the theater.

The workshop for younger actors is $150, the other is $75.
