North Kitsap’s fastpitch team went deeper into the season than any other team from the Narrows League Bridge Division in 2006. The Lady Viking’s ended the season on a tear reminiscent of 2005 and carried it to a tie for seventh place at the state tournament.
But only North’s ace, Rachel Kramer made the list for the Kitsap News Group’s All-Kitsap Fastpitch Team, which was compiled with sprinkles of all schools by the KNG sports writers at the completion of high school spring sports in 2006.
1B — Lauren Johnson, Central Kitsap — One of the Cougars’ most powerful bats, Johnson hit .359 with a pair of homers and 13 RBI this season for the Bridge Division champs. One of many returners, the Cougars will rely on her leadership in 2007.
2B — Natalie Peapea, South Kitsap — Solid in the field, the junior Peapea was the Wolves’ leadoff hitter and carried a regular season average of .328. She had seven extra base hits and drove in four runs while compiling an on-base percentage of .569.
SS — Cara Thompson, Bainbridge — Thompson made a big splash in her freshman season, hitting safely 37 times in 78 at-bats collecting a .561 batting average for the season with a .603 on-base percentage and a .758 slugging average. She also drove in 26 runs, scored 21 and led the team in doubles with nine.
3B — Stephanie Wagner, Bainbridge — The junior had a great year at the plate, hitting .344 with a .432 on-base percentage. She also drove in 17 runs and scored 15.
C — Jocylynn Meadows, Klahowya — While Meadows may best be remembered for her vivacious call of “Come on! Come on!†to any runner that dared try to score on her, her stellar defense, hot bat and leadership made her the county’s best — as a sophomore.
OF — Joy Thomas, South Kitsap — Thomas was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise drab season for the Wolves. The senior was the team leader in batting average (.385), extra base hits (11), runs batted in (15) and home runs (two).
OF — Brittany Romano, Central Kitsap — CK got a whole lot more than it may have bargained for when Romano moved from Florida to Silverdale this school year. Romano promptly hit a team high .377 with five triples, 16 runs and 16 RBI. She added four doubles and two homers while holding down center field defensively.
OF — Kelcee Azure, Bainbridge — After a slow start, the junior centerfielder picked it up down the stretch, finishing with a .395 batting average. She also scored 16 runs and drew eight walks.
UTL — Brianna Quitugua, Bremerton — The second-team all-league utility player displayed versatility and a passion for the sport that inspired a young Knights’ team. Quitugua also swung a bat that was certainly the best Bremerton had to offer, hitting .406 with five doubles and a .444 on-base percentage.
UTL — Brittney Devitt, Klahowya — Batting over .600, Devitt proved herself as one of the top all-around softball players in the region. With eight homers and a phenomenal slugging percentage of 1.536, Devitt will be leading the Eagles’ charge into the new Olympic League next season.
P — Erika Quint, Central Kitsap — The ace of the county this season, Quint was 12-5 overall this year while striking out a whopping 150 batters in just 118 innings. Quint led a CK team that had a 1.55 team ERA, with her own below that mark.
P — Rachel Kramer, North Kitsap — Throughout the season, Kramer was rock steady as North’s ace and at the state tourney she pitched complete games in all four Viking contests. But next year she is planning to step off the rubber and into the shortstop spot at Western Washington University.
P — Karen Robinson, Bainbridge — Robinson had a breakout year after a solid freshman campaign, as she went 6-4 with a 2.83 ERA and 38 strikeouts. She also played catcher and first base, hitting .404, driving in 18 runs and scoring 16. She also led the team in walks, drawing 12.
P — Rachel Haas, Olympic — Haas teamed up with fellow sophomore Kelsey Anchors to help lift the Trojans to their first playoff berth in the Narrows League. Also a solid shortstop with a potent bat, Haas is sure to leave her mark at Oly.
P — Lindsey Willmann, Bainbridge — Willman was another freshman who made a mark for the Spartans in 2006. She pitched a 6-4 record with a 1.98 ERA and 78 strikeouts on the mound, averaging eight strikeouts per game. She also played first base and hit .362 with a .492 on-base percentage and a .617 slugging average, with one home run and 25 RBI.
Coach of the Year — Rachel Davenport, Olympic — Davenport did what no Oly softball coach in the Narrows League era could do before her, taking the Trojans to a playoff berth. With a team stocked full of youth, Davenport instilled confidence and know-how, turning a team that went just 1-16 in 2005 into a 12-9 postseason squad. With all but three players returning, the Trojans will be in the hunt for a title in the new Olympic League next season.
