SILVERDALE – The Kitsap Chordsmen, West Sound’s “Excellence in A Cappella,” will host an evening when all men are welcome to sing along and try out four-part harmony. Participants will sing with the chorus, but can also try singing in a quartet. The event begins 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30 at the Olympic Evangelical Free Church, 14861 Silverdale Way.

Experienced singers and new singers can participate in a 90-minute session of singing with dozens of male singers who have been honing their singing craft for many years. Materials for singing along on easy and more difficult songs will be provided, although much of the time is spent doing fun vocal harmonizing. It is free, and there is no commitment. The purpose is to give men in the community a chance to experience the fun of singing along in robust harmony.

The Kitsap Chordsmen, established in 1978 as the local chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society, has the 501(c)3 non-profit charter of educating the community in vocal music and providing charitable works in the community. They perform often at nursing homes and other charitable functions, but are also for-hire by businesses and individuals for their own functions. Also, they produce their own shows, which are high-energy scripted plays featuring the chorus, chapter quartets, and invited guest singers. The next production is Sept. 24 with International Quartet Competition medalists, Main Street. More information about them is at mainstreetqt.com.

The Chordsmen recently participated in Central Kitsap High School’s spring show, Great American Musical. They were invited to sing on stage with the teenage singers, who put out consistently strong performances of their own.

“It is a real treat to be able to sing with the high school choirs, and I am so glad that Alicia Rodenko (CKHS choirs director) invited us,” said Chordsmen director Mike Menefee.

The Chordsmen were pleased to present a $1,500 donation that evening to CKHS choirs to help in purchasing needed audio equipment such as speakers and soundboard.

The Olympic Evangelical Free Church is near the Keyport junction between Silverdale and Poulsbo. The chapter is not affiliated with the church, but rents the space. The rehearsal venue has very good acoustics to make a really good sound.
