The Whaling Days Hank Mann Sykes scholarship has been awarded for the last nine years. The scholarship is available for Central Kitsap School District students that have a strong sense of community involvement and volunteerism.
Last year’s scholarships were awarded to Jeffry L. Yenko at Olympic High School, Jasmine Ford, Sierra Keffer and Lee Knapp at Central Kitsap High School and Veronica Harris at Klahowya Secondary School.
This year’s scholarship will total up to $1,000. Each applicant is required to demonstrate community involvement and volunteerism and why they feel that is an important contribution to their community. The scholarship application is now available in the counseling offices of Central Kitsap High School, Klahowya Secondary School, Olympic High School, as well as East and West Alternative School. The application is also available on www.whalingdays.org. Applications must be postmarked by April 13.
Over the last 43 years Silverdale Whaling Days has become a summer staple for families from all over the Kitsap County community. The festival is a not-for-profit organization run exclusively by volunteers. Each year Whaling Days donates proceeds to the local community through charitable contributions and scholarships.
The 2015 Silverdale Whaling Days takes place on July 24-26 at Silverdale Waterfront Park.
