Supports Streissguth for County Commission

Published 10:23 am Friday, October 17, 2014

A recent letter to the editor penned by Mike Gustafson states, “Ed Wolfe strongly opposes Title V and may be able to convince one other commissioner of Title V’s insanity.”

Two things are very troubling about this statement.

First, there is no Title 5 in the Kitsap County Code! (See Kitsap County Code, www.codepublishing.com/WA/kitsapcounty).

Second: Is candidate Wolfe strongly opposed to imaginary enemies?

Kitsap does not need commissioner candidates fighting imaginary foes.

The “insanity” referred to in Mr. Gustafson’s letter would never survive the public process. He presents a classic “paper tiger” argument. His dire warnings are typical of misinformation campaigns in politics. I can’t believe that Mr. Wolfe would choose to support such misinformation and “strongly oppose” imaginary codes. If he does, shame on him.

County Commissioner Linda Streissguth strongly supports public participation and the solution of real problems. I strongly support Commissioner Streissguth.

The county commissioners are aware of several complaints about lack of code compliance throughout the county. In response, they have just begun to examine the problem. There is a process.  Steps include defining the problem and recommending solutions.

If the problem is significant,  stakeholders such as the Kitsap Homebuilders and Realtors Associations as well as interested citizens will meet and discuss the issue.

If a County Code is proposed, it will be examined by county legal staff for constitutional issues and alignment with state and national law. County staff will then prepare a proposed code for public hearing.

If land use issues are involved, the code will first have a hearing with the Planning Commission.  Its recommendation will be passed to the Board of County Commissioners, which will then hold its hearings.

“Insanity” will not survive the process that Commissioner Streissguth supports.  Retain Linda Streissguth.
