Deadline for grants to help homeowners with mortgage payments next week

Homeowners who need help making current and past-due mortgage payments must apply by Friday, July 22 to receive assistance from a federal program.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Emergency Homeowners’ Loan Program, known by its acronym EHLP, can give eligible homeowners with a zero percent interest forgivable loans that pay past-due mortgage payments as well as a portion of the homeowners’ mortgage payments for up to 24 consecutive months, or up to $50,000, whichever comes first, according to a statement. Homeowners must apply by July 22 for the program assistance through a participating housing counseling agency.

The state’s share of the grant is about $56.2 million.
