Passenger ferry put safety first
I appreciate that the Spirit of Kingston choose not to mess with Mother Nature last week. Pete DeBoer’s decision to turn the boat back was the safe thing to do and the Herald shouldn’t have scolded him for it. Whether or not the Victoria Express could have conquered those gale force seas, as speculated in the Herald, is anyone’s guess, but I doubt any riders would have voted to find out.
Bad NW weather is a fact of life for all our transportation systems: I can’t get up Jefferson Point Rd in the snow; Sounder gets stopped by mudslides; and our State Ferries occasionally suspend service. Sound Runner cannot be immune unless the Almighty gives Pete power to calm the seas. While we’re waiting let’s just respect Mother Nature’s moods and not complain about it.
