An endearing landmark is in a federal competition to get some serious cash. The Point No Point lighthouse, which draws visitors to white-sand beaches of Hansville, is so close to receiving much-needed preservation funds that we can almost smell the paint drying.

The 131-year-old lighthouse is just a just a few click of the mouse away from a facelift as it’s one of 25 Puget Sound landmarks competing for a Partners in Preservation grant. Up for grabs is $1 million, offered by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and American Express. The United States Lighthouse Society, based in the lighthouse, needs $118,000 to preserve the lighthouse.

All North Kitsapers have to do is vote.

In an “American Idol” type of competition, fans of the lighthouse are encouraged to go to www.preservationnation.org until May 12 and vote for their favorite landmark.

This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to preserve a beloved tourist attraction. Vote for the Point No Point lighthouse.
