Pickup truck spills transmission fluid into Kingston marina

A pickup truck rolled off the Port of Kingston boat ramp Friday afternoon, prompting a hasty spill response.

The truck had been parked on the marina’s boat ramp when its transmission failed, North Kitsap Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Michele Laboda said. Fluid began spewing from the transmission and the pickup rolled into about four feet of water. Approximately 1.5 gallons of fluid were spilled in the cove, creating a film over the water.

NKF&R responded at 1:24 p.m. and assisted Port of Kingston personnel in deploying a Department of Ecology spill response kit. Crews surrounded the spill with a containment boom, then used absorbent pads to sponge up the spill.

A tow truck pulled the truck from the water.

The Port of Kingston is one of about 60 sites in Washington where DOE has stockpiled spill response equipment for use by local agencies.
