Sports updates: Villopoto wins at Qwest

Sports updates for April 20, 2009.

SUPERCROSS

Poulsbo’s Ryan Villopoto, in his first race after being out sick for more than a month, won the Monster Energy AMA Supercross race Saturday at Qwest Field in Seattle. The victory was his first in the Supercross premier division. Villopoto is in his rookie season in the premier class, after three successful years in the lites division. He had finished third three times this year, and held the fourth place spot on the tour, but dropped to ninth overall after becoming ill. With Saturday’s win, Villopoto now sits in eighth place. Villopoto and the rest of the Supercross crew travel to Salt Lake City, Utah, this weekend for their next race.

BASEBALL

North Kitsap came from behind to beat Olympic Friday, 6-5 in Poulsbo. Jeremy Aske drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh, with two out. Alex Smith picked up the win for North. North is now a half game behind Klahowya for the top spot in the Olympic League. The two teams square off at North Kitsap today at 4 p.m.

Kingston beat Interlake 9-5 Friday in non-league play. Reuben Smith led the Bucs, going 2-for-4 with a double. Kyle Murray was credited with the win for the Bucs.

FASTPITCH

Kingston fell to Sequim Saturday, 11-1. Katie Lomas picked up the loss for Kingston, while going 3-for-4 at the plate.

TRACK

North Kitsap went to North Mason Friday for a track meet.

Boys scores: Olympic 80.5, North Kitsap 70.5, North Mason 36.

Girls scores: North Kitsap 130, Olympic 42, North Mason 15.

SOCCER

Kingston fell to Steilacoom Saturday, 3-1, in non-league play. Riley Anderson had the lone goal for the Bucs in the 19th minute. Kingston maintained the lead until halftime, but Steilacoom went on a tear early in the second half, scoring all three of their goals in the opening 10 minutes.

The North Kitsap boys soccer team performed community service at Poulsbo’s Fish Park Saturday, for the third year in a row. The players planted native trees, installed bird houses and removed invasive plants.
