Eighteen SK wrestlers qualify for regional tournament

The South Kitsap Wolves wrestling team’s 24 competitors at the SPSL tournament at Puyallup High School Feb. 4-5 finished in second place with 345 points behind Curtis High School.

South Kitsap finished second in league action this season.

The girls tournament took place at Emerald Ridge the same days.

Of those 24 athletes, 18 South Kitsap wrestlers — including one female — will continue on to the regional wrestling tournament Feb. 11 at Curtis.

Those advancing are:

1st place

Devin Gentz – 120 pounds

Gentz beat Anderson Le of Bellarmine, Ethan Schweyen of Puyallup, Kyler Stancato of Curtis and Logan Swank of Emerald Ridge to go 4-0 in the tournament.

Mason Eaglin – 138 pounds

Eaglin had a bye the first round before going on to beat Austin Blankenchip of Graham-Kapowsin. In order to reach the final, Eaglin had to take down fellow South Kitsap teammate Quinn Ogan before beating Josh Franich of Puyallup in the first-place match.

Sebastian Robles – 145 pounds

Robles also had a bye the first round. He later pinned Cavan Weber of Sumner in the quarterfinal round, then went on to beat teammate Deyondre Davis in the semifinal. In the final, he pinned Chad Simonson of Graham-Kapowsin to claim first place in his weight class.

2nd place

Davonn Keyes – 152 pounds

Keyes, who had a bye in the first round, later faced Wyatt Martin of Olympia and won by fall. In the semifinal, he beat Trace Fischlin of Sumner before ultimately losing to Layn Pannkuk of Olympia by an 8-1 decision.

Nathan Marin – 160 pounds

Marin had a bye the first round. He faced Derrick Derricks of Emerald Ridge in the quarterfinal, and beat him by a pin at 4:43. In the semifinal, he beat Isaac Clark of Puyallup. In the first-place match, he lost in a 3-1 decision to Ketner Fields of Curtis.

Dalton Varney – 170 pounds

Varney, who had a bye the first round, later pinned Hunter Kerth of Emerald Ridge in less than a minute in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal, he won a 2-1 decision over Jonah Brumbaugh of Sumner before bowing to Alex Stuart of Curtis in the final.

JJ Leota – 182 pounds

Leota had a bye the first round before pinning Kyle Peter of Rogers in the quarterfinals. Leota then beat teammate Thomas Miller in the semifinal round in a 19-11 decision. In the first-place match, he lost to Casey Cramer of Puyallup.

Izaiah Davis – 195 pounds

After a bye in the first round, Davis pinned Porter Kamerath of Olympia in 47 seconds. He beat Fields Kordell of Emerald Ridge in a 9-2 decision before being beaten by Jay Roberts of Curtis in the first-place match.

3rd place

Ashton Schessler – 113 pounds

Schessler had a bye the first round. In the quarterfinals, he lost to Evan Janson of Curtis by an 8-7 decision. In the consolation bracket, he went on to beat Chase Poston of Olympia, teammate Clayton Brooks and Hunter Johnson of Puyallup to claim third place.

Jacob Laws – 132 pounds

Laws pinned Chris Jennings of Graham-Kapowsin in the first round before beating Kasey Williams of Puyallup in the quarterfinals. He lost to Lane Holland of Graham-Kapowsin in the semifinal before beating Blake Vandeberg of Sumner in the consolation semifinal, then beat Ethan Janson of Curtis for third place.

Quinn Ogan – 138 pounds

Ogan pinned Jackie Siose of Graham-Kapowsin in the first round and won his quarterfinal over Dylan Abel of Rogers. In the semifinal, Ogan fell to teammate Mason Eaglin. Moving on to compete in the consolation semifinal, Ogan beat Jame Cathey of Rogers before beating Brendin Kesling of Curtis to take third place.

Thomas Miller – 182 pounds

In the first round, Miller beat Charles Easley of Puyallup by pinning him in 51 seconds. He won his quarterfinal match against Eachean Pettis of Olympia with a 10-8 decision before losing to teammate JJ Leota in the semifinals. In the consolation bracket, Miller pinned Zack Chavez of Sumner and Dylan Sanders of Rogers to earn third place.

Hali Deck – 145 pounds (female division)

Deck had a bye in the first round. She later pinned Marion Harmsen of Emerald Ridge in 59 seconds in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, she fell to Brooke Mullins of Puyallup. Deck then beat Kaitlin Williams of Curtis to go on to the third-place match and pin Vianey Cablero of Rogers in 37 seconds.
