Two Bremerton police officers were shot and the suspect killed this morning near Lions Park

BREMERTON — Two Bremerton police officers were shot and the suspect killed this morning at Lebo Boulevard and Hefner Street, near Lions Park.

The Bremerton Police Department reported that the officers are hospitalized.

A 53-year-old Bremerton man fired numerous shots at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was declared dead at the scene.

Citing police sources, KOMO News reported that the incident began at 1:16 a.m. when the officers approached the man, who was believed to have violated a domestic violence protection order. The man was in the front driver’s seat of an SUV in the Lions Park parking lot.

“Police say initial reports are that the man opened fire on both officers,” KOMO reported. “One officer was shot at least twice in the abdomen, and the other was hit in the waist … The officers returned fire and killed the man, police said.”

News of the shootings shook up the community. Within four hours, more than 80 comments had been posted to the police department’s Facebook page, offering prayers for the officers and their families.
