This year, our One Book, One Community title is “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot.

This year, our One Book, One Community title is “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rebecca Skloot. Come to the library to pick up your copy and read it along with hundreds of others in Kitsap County.   At your library this month, related to this One Book  selection, we have:
— Kingston Book Group, Oct. 3, 10:30 a.m.  The group will discuss a book of choice inspired by “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”

— “Life in the 1950s: The Making of Immortality,”  Oct 16, 6:30 p.m. Henrietta Lacks died in 1951, literally a different era in American history. What was life like in the early 1950s? Historian Stephanie Lile provides important context for our understanding of Henrietta’s saga.

— Book Group Discussion on “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Oct. 17, 10:30 a.m.

— Zombie Mania, Oct. 10, 3:30-5 p.m. Especially for grades 6-12. Bring your friends and their braaaaaaiiins for a fun afternoon full of all things zombie, including a zombifying make-up tutorial, zombie crafts, and more.

— Classics Book Group.  Oct. 15, 6:30 p.m. We will discuss “The Time Machine” by H.G. Wells. The novel is considered one of the earliest works of science fiction and the progenitor of the “time travel” subgenre.

— Lego Mania, Oct. 17, 3:30–5 p.m. Love Legos? The library does too. That’s why we’re providing snacks and plenty of Legos. For children.

— Pajama Storytime, Mondays, 7-7:30 p.m.  Children can wear pajamas and hear bedtime stories with our youth services librarian.

— Preschool Storytime, Wednesdays, 10:30-11 a.m. Come and enjoy stories, rhymes, songs and more. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver.  Siblings welcome.

— Kingston Writers Group, Oct. 9 and 23, 6:30 p.m. Enjoy a friendly, supportive atmosphere to encourage writing.

— Trivia Challenge. Adults 21 and older have an opportunity to support the Kingston Friends of the Library in a Trivia Challenge on Oct. 20, 7 p.m. in the Kingston Community Center.  Tickets are $15 and are available at the Kingston Chamber of Commerce.  For more information, write kingstonfol@hotmail.com or call the library.

— One Book Discussion Forum with Susan Brown Trinidad, Oct. 11, 2-3 p.m.  A UW researcher discusses medical and ethical issues raised by our One Book selection.

— African-American Women in the 1950s, Oct. 13, 11 a.m. Storyteller Eva M. Abram will present vignettes of African-American women throughout the country who lived in the 1950s. For teens and adults.

— One Book Movie Matinee: “Gattaca,” Oct. 19, 2:30 p.m. In the not-too-distant future, society categorizes individuals based on genetics.
