Four students, school receive
Hansville garden club awards

HANSVILLE — Four North Kitsap residents and an elementary school are the latest recipients of the Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club awards.

The garden club provides opportunities each spring for graduating high school seniors and others to apply for scholarships to study in fields related to the environment and horticulture. The club also provides opportunities for North Kitsap community organizations to apply for grants to support their conservation and beautification efforts.

Nolan Platz and Wendy Yu, 2016 graduates of Kingston High School, were each awarded scholarships. Nolan will major in bioengineering at Santa Clara University in California; Yu will major in biology at Washington State University.

Cory Osterhoudt, who has experience in the fields of conservation and landscape maintenance, was awarded a scholarship to pursue a degree in environmental science at Western Washington University on the Peninsulas.

Gabriel Ayers, who has experience in garden and landscape maintenance, was awarded a scholarship to pursue a landscape design degree at Edmonds Community College.

Wolfle Elementary School in Kingston received a grant to support its efforts in teaching children gardening skills and skills for observing nature in the school’s playground garden.

Emily Cauter receives
PEO chapter scholarship

POULSBO — PEO Chapter GI of Poulsbo presented Emily Cauter with a grant from the PEO Program for Continuing Education Fund that assists women in following their educational goals.

Cauter is enrolled in the Advanced Standing Masters of Social Work program at Eastern Washington University, which she will complete in June 2018.

She is the daughter of Jim and Sylvia Cauter of Poulsbo. She is a 2011 graduate of North Kitsap High School and a 2015 graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where she earned her bachelor of arts in social work.

The PEO Sisterhood is a women’s organization that promotes educational opportunities for women., providing grants, scholarships, and loans through six funds. The Sisterhood has 250,000 members in the United States and Canada. PEO members meet locally in small groups, called chapters, and Chapter GI of Poulsbo sponsored Cauter for this grant.

Lions, Rotary host
food drive for Fishline

POULSBO — Two local service organizations, Poulsbo Lions Club and Poulsbo Rotary Club, are joining together to collect food and donations for North Kitsap Fishline from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 15 and 16.

Look for Lions and Rotarians at Central Market, Red Apple and Walmart in Poulsbo.
