Kelsey Moss was awarded the title of Miss Viking Fest and $2,000 in scholarships March 26 at the 12th annual Miss Viking Fest Pageant, in the North Kitsap Auditorium. She succeeds Carson Smallbeck, Miss Viking Fest 2010. Kylie Villopoto and Alissa Neuman were named princesses and each received a $500 scholarship. Kaitlyn McKinsey won the first Little Miss Viking Fest title; Tatyana Morgan-Reyes was named a princess.

When Darlene Iskra joined the Navy in early 1979, she was looking for a steady job with benefits. She received much more: a successful career that would see her become the first female commander of a Navy ship. “I knew I was the first (woman) and I felt a responsibility to show that equal opportunity works in the Navy,” said Iskra, who recently moved to Bremerton. Iskra’s rise to command wasn’t easy.
Harry G. Wyatt passed away on March 12 at The Harbor House in Poulsbo. He was 80. He was born on Jan. 12, 1931 in The Dalles, Wasco, Ore. He was a resident of Poulsbo.
Antoinette Kim Park passed away on March 11 in Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She was 66. She was born on Aug. 4, 1944 in Seattle to Anthony P. and Jewell Park. She received her bachelor of fine arts from Cornish.
Ross Emory Berglund of Bainbridge Island passed away on March 5 in Swedish Hospital in Seattle after suffering congestive heart failure. His sons Steven, Daniel and Timothy were at his bedside. He was 97. He was born Oct. 30, 1913 in Aberdeen, Wash., to Harry and Anastasia (Nettie) Berglund, both deceased.

The blanket in Karen Gerstenberger’s arms is more than a pretty quilt. For her daughter, Katie, it was an important source of comfort while in the hospital. The blanket became Katie’s bathrobe, a blinder to hide her from watching shots, a mask to block smells, and a way to pass the time by discussing the different flowers on the fabric. And after Katie passed away, it became Karen’s motivation to start Katie’s Comforters Guild.
