‘Lady Bird’ showcases talents of Ronan, Metcalf | Screening Room

High-grossing film could be in line for a slew of Academy Award nominations.

Nick Taylor, owner of the Dragonfly Cinema in Port Orchard, is an occasional movie reviewer for the Port Orchard Independent. In this column, he reviews the critically acclaimed and sure-fire Oscar contender “Lady Bird.” The film runs through Jan. 9 at the Dragonfly Cinema.

The film “Lady Bird” tells the story of a headstrong teenage girl working to understand who she is, who she wants to be and where those two meet with all of the comedy and drama that time in our lives can contain.

Following her Oscar nomination for last year’s “Brooklyn,” Saoirse Ronan delivers another standout performance as Lady Bird.

She experiences many of the usual joys and heartbreaks associated with the last year of high school and tussles with her equally willful mother (a marvelous performance by Laurie Metcalf, who rose to fame on the TV show “Roseanne”).

What makes this film special is the warmth, tenderness and specificity that first-time director Greta Gerwig brings to what could have easily become trite.

Lady Bird made major news when it broke the record previously held by “Toy Story 2” for most consecutive positive reviews without a negative review.

See the film for yourself and you’ll understand why it has garnered such an overwhelmingly positive response and sparked warm feelings in so many.
