Educate the public that Viking hats with horns simply never existed

I was so glad to see the opinion page today about getting rid of those bizarre Viking horns, including the historic reminder about authenticity. I was afraid nobody would listen or cared when I commented about it in a Letter to the Editor last year. Even my pleas to the Chamber of Commerce this year, trying to convince them that using such a misleading logo is just not cool, were dismissed.

Poulsbo takes pride in its Norwegian heritage, and rightfully so. Even my family visiting from Denmark felt at home here, but other than raising an eyebrow or two were too polite to laugh out loud about the horns.

Why produce and sell paraphernalia that’s simply not authentic — just to appease tourists who don’t know any better and insist on buying hats with horns, some even with added braided pigtails — especially during Viking Fest? It’s like adding horns to the crown of our Statue of Liberty — the horns simply don’t belong.

Educate the public that Viking hats with horns simply never existed.
